DJ EVIL DEE

(Beatminerz / Black Moon / N.Y.C.)

"There's a lot of albums out now that are wack but they're winning 'cause we don't have anything out there that's going against them. I'm a fan. I buy hip-hop tapes and I'm not happy with a lot of shit. The beats sound tired. We're bringing that bang back", Evil Dee exclaims.

Back in the early 90's, Buckshot and 5FT. were hiphop dancers, while Evil Dee was building a rep as a successful DJ with the increasing circulation of his local mix-tapes. Along with another local Brooklyn bomber named Finista, the foursome formed Black Moon. Religiously shopping the demo to any and all labels, they were consistently rejected because their musical aesthetic wasn't gangsta or commercial.

In 1992, Black Moon's demo got reviewed in an issue of Right On! And during a show for a local New York radio deejays DNA and Hank Love, they were discovered by pioneering hip-hop radio deejay Chuck Chillout. Serving as a manager, he helped the trio get their infamous deal with Nervous Records. Learning quickly about the shystiness of the music business, Black Moon would eventually bolt from the label in a bitter dispute. Buck would found Duck Down Records and put out music from his cohorts, the Cocoa Brovaz, Heltah Skeltah and O.G.C. Buckshot, 5 FT. & Evil Dee were putting their souls on two inch reels. Now, after years of legal maneuvering, they can take great pride in knowing that their hard work will pay off.
