At what age did you start singing?
I’ve been singing since I was a child. The whole singing in the choir thing at school. I never took it as seriously as my dancing but they always went hand in hand during school productions. Started working on it seriously when I joined a band. That’s when the real education began I think.
Was it a childhood dream to work in the entertainment industry?
I’ve always been a dancer. I used to have an ambition to own a dance school rather then be a pop singer!!! How thing change ey ;-)
Coming from an Asian background, was it hard for your family to take in what you wanted to do and be? Or have they supported you from day one?
Well my dad always loved music and dance and so would take me to my dance classes 2 or 3 nights a week. I guess my parents wanted me to keep it as a hobby....and when I told them I was going to pursue it as a career.....it was more concern and worry then lack of support from them.
How did you make your first ever break through?
I don't think there’s any such thing as one big break. I’ve achieved so much so far which many may think to be a non event! I’ve toured the world as a dancer, I’ve sang in front of 20 thousand people, and I’ve choreographed for TV and film......I think that’s cool! Let’s call them all little breaks! I think if you work hard at what you love...you can achieve anything.
Apart from singing, your also a dancer and choreographer, how did you get interested in that?
I started dancing as a child and my teachers always taught me to perform. So I would always be interested in making the crowd happy and entertain them. That goes with my choreography too. People liked the way I danced and so opportunities came up where they wanted dance pieces in that same style I always think I’m a choreographer by default.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced as an artist?
Everyday has a new challenge. You are meeting people all the time, some who have an active interest in your career, others who you can work with in other ways. The challenge is keeping the momentum going, making the team work...but most of all making sure you still enjoy it.
As an artists you have a target audience, who is your target audience and why?
Well for the type of music I do, I guess my music caters for the younger market. I mean if I was young now, around 13-16....I would be interested in an artist such as myself. I want the girls to really feel what I’m about - Asian as well as non Asian. But then I know I have admirers who are older then that and guys too ...hehehe
Many people have compared you to as being the Asian J-Lo, how does that make you feel?
You know I don't think any ones actually compared me to j lo...it was just a thing to say at the time. I mean...yes I sing and dance...like so many other artists! But hey...sometimes we need to make comparisons so that we can understand where something is coming from. And hey I suppose being compared to a successful artist can't be a bad thing!
What would you like to achieve by the end of the year and any projects planned for next year?
By the end of the year....hmm...well I’d like people to know who "Mistri" is and be aware of the music. I’d like to continue performing up and down the country and to complete an album. As for next year.......just continue playing and loving what I do!
