Thats speaks volumes for the Bhangra star who has come from nowhere & is now sitting right at the top! Exclusive Interview
At what age did u start singing?
From the age of 6 I learnt to read & write Punjabi then progressing on to singing Kitan in Raags (classical). I learnt to play the Harmonium & my younger brother Gurmit (Dippa) played the Tabla.
What helped in developing your talent?
Without doubt the teachings of my Guru Ji “Ustaad Ajit Singh Mutlashi Ji” & also I stayed in Punjab (India) for a while when I was 8-9 years old, this enhanced my Punjabi pronunciation & my love for my mother tongue grew.
What made you decide to become a singer?
I had learnt to sing from a young age. My friends believed in my ability they encouraged me to use my talents. A shining light in the emergence of my career & someone who had recognised my potential was the 70’s & 80’s Dholak legend Late Harblast Rai Jhalli, known affectionately as “Baho” to his friends. 5 years ago I decided to make singing my career & have devoted my full attention towards singing.
How did u feel when your first song became a smash hit?
It felt great, I thank the almighty Waheguru because without his grace it wouldn’t be possible. My first song “Tera Tumka” was a step towards full-filling my dreams & making them reality.
How does your style of singing differ to other Artists & what makes you stand out?
I write, compose & sing my songs in my own style. I don’t copy or aspire to be like any other singers past or present. A talented musician recently said to me that “all the great singers have uniqueness in their voice which distinguishes them from the rest & u have uniqueness in your voice”. I’d rather the pure Punjabi music lovers define what makes me standout rather than me.
What do you love about singing?
Everything!! When I write, compose & sing a song, the positive vibe & love I get is indescribable. My live performance’s on stage & entertaining the crowds is another huge buzz that can’t be matched. I just love singing, it’s like a ride you never want to get off.
Who are you influenced by?
I have many singers who have influenced me like the Late Dhadi Amar Singh Shonki, Late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Gurdass Mann, Sardool Sikander, Surjit Bhindrakia, Hans Raj Hans & Udit Narayan.
Who are your favourite Bhangra, Hindi and Mainstream Artists?
All those I’ve named above for Bhangra & Hindi. For Mainstream it really varies from Michael Boulton, Mariah Carey to Buster Rhymes, DMX & Dr. Dre.
Do you get recognised when you are out?
Yes, on a few occasions. So far it’s been very good because everyone who has recognised me has said alot of nice compliments.
Have you ever experienced anything different after a stage performance that has made you laugh?
Its funny u should ask that. In October I had a live gig in London, my friends & I turned up for the gig but the promoter didn’t recognise me. When I’d finished my performance the promoter came up to me hugged me. He had heard my songs & new the name Mehsopuria but never new what I looked like.
What are the ambitions of ‘Mehsopuria’ in life?
My ambitions are to sing for at least 15 years & to do my best to keep my Punjabi culture alive in the western hemisphere through my singing.
Any special message for ‘Mehsopuria’ fans?
I would like to thank them from the bottom of my heart for their support & love. My aim is to continue to entertain them through my songs. Without them there is no Mehsopuria.
